## About the party

Subversive Garage Pop

KIM SALMON is a legend. He has been performing on stages around the world since 1976, reinventing himself from time to time while always staying relevant. Now he is gracing the Sedel for the second time with his latest band, SMOKED SALMON. Their second LP should already be in tow. Their first record has turned out to be a wonderful piece of Sunday pop. "Maybe" recalls his indie successes with Kim Salmon & The Surrealists and their "Feel". "Just A Little Bit Of Rain" is a quiet ballad that draws on country influences and brings a gentle smile to the sofa. And even when they head into rockier waters, as on "How Ya Gonna Get Back Home", everything sounds so effortless, as if thrown together on the spur of the moment, yet it hits the mark perfectly.
Kim Salmon responsible for The Chrome Cranks? Absolutely. Whether he should also take the blame for Nick Cave and the grunge wave, I'll leave to others to judge. We're delighted to welcome this Australian legend back to the Sedel. With SMOKED SALMON, he plays his soulful pop songs, but also delves into his musical baggage from nearly fifty years on the road and plays the odd THE SCIENTISTS evergreen or a song by THE BEASTS OF BOURBON.
Numero Group recently released recordings by KIM SALMON's first band, CHEAP NASTIES, from 1976. Punk as direct and aggressive as it could only be in Australia. In 1979 he formed THE SCIENTISTS, with whom he gave the world the two immortal power-pop hit singles "Frantic Romantic" and "Last night", followed by an LP. But by 1982 it was time to move on again, and THE SCIENTISTS invented swamp punk: guitars were no longer just there to play melodies, but created soundscapes. The music became dark and heavy and was already being described as grunge at the time. "Swampland" and "We Had Love" are songs that defined a genre. The music distributor "Clear Spot" may have been influenced by a Scientists song, and perhaps the label "Demolition Derby" too. Jon Spencer covered his song "Murderess In A Purple Dress" and there's a whole compilation of bands like Mudhoney, Cheater Slicks, Walking Seeds and Laughing Hyenas covering his songs. THE SCIENTISTS toured Europe and settled in London for a time. Alongside all that, Kim Salmon played guitar and wrote songs for THE BEASTS OF BOURBON until the 1990s.
In 1988 he formed KIM SALMON & THE SURREALISTS. The pressure was released and the trio made room for noise and almost free jazz. Their first LP, "Hit Me With The Surreal Feel", was later reissued in the US by the cult label IN THE RED RECORDS. A return to rock brought commercial success with the following LPs, and they have now reached their eighth SURREALISTS album. Along the way, there were also LPs with bands like THE ANTENNAS and THE BUSINESS, as well as acoustic solo albums and country albums with his band DARLING DOWNS. And, incidentally, comics, posters and paintings too, because KIM SALMON is also a painter.
If you can't contain your excitement, you can camp out in front of the Sedel the night before.
DJ SLINKY FEATHER
DJ Slinky Feather will be behind the turntables. Punk, pub rock, cheesy country or rockabilly-infected garage, the gold stash is coming out.
