His band The Adverts was considered one of the most important groups on the scene from 1976 to 1979 and had a bona fide hit with "Gary Gilmore's Eyes". But while many of the figures from that era were ground down over the years or now simply trade on their old songs, TV Smith has kept going. With his art, which has always been political too, he may be more important today than ever. Since the 90s, he has mostly pursued a solo career, reliably releasing his always remarkable, always relevant albums at regular intervals. He can count on a devoted fan base around the world, by no means made up only of surviving punk veterans. Rather, in every new generation it seems to become common knowledge sooner or later that this tireless, one-of-a-kind Englishman is travelling the world, this punk poet with his excellent lyrics, as lyrical as they are critical. Known for the unsparing energy of his live performances, TV Smith often plays more than 100 concerts a year in various countries, mostly in Europe, unless a pandemic gets in the way. Increasingly, TV Smith performs his songs in the classic singer-songwriter mode, accompanied only by his own acoustic guitar. That by no means means he has become quieter or more conciliatory. On the contrary, his often angry yet always hopeful in their commitment lyrics about the fundamental social ills in the United Kingdom gain even more force with the sparse instrumentation. TV Smith sings about a society that has been deeply divided since long before Brexit and whose welfare system was already crumbling before the coronavirus pandemic. He mostly does so from the perspective of the working class, which he has always given a voice to.
