About the party

When Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn reinterpreted Tchaikovsky's famous "Nutcracker" in 1960, one of the most original projects in jazz history was born. With great respect for the original and a generous dose of creativity, they transformed the familiar melodies into swinging, bluesy and surprisingly modern compositions.

Pieces such as "Sugar Rum Cherry", "Peanut Brittle Brigade" and "Dance of the Floreadores" are impressive examples of how Ellington and Strayhorn translated classical music into their own sound world. The result was not simply an arrangement of the original, but a work in its own right that continues to inspire musicians around the world.

During Advent, the Intercity Jazz Orchestra invites you to explore this distinctive musical world. Look forward to an evening of music between jazz and classical music, very much in the spirit of Duke Ellington.

The band

The Intercity Jazz Orchestra (ICJO) is a big band association based in Lucerne. What makes it special is that professional musicians, students and amateurs play together, creating a unique atmosphere at their concerts. This collaboration also makes it possible to perform at an above-average level.

The band was founded in 1978 and can therefore rightly be counted among the pioneers of Lucerne's jazz scene. Quite a few well-known Swiss musicians, including Roli von Flüe, Paul Haag, Siro Spörli, Lukas Gernet and Claudia Döffinger, have been part of the ICJO during their careers.

The ICJO is one of the very few big bands still active in Lucerne, continuing to perform with great commitment and passion despite all the challenges. This spirit also comes across on stage and gives the concerts that little something special.
