KILLER KIN from New Haven, Connecticut, USA play furious garage-punk-n-roll, a hybrid of Reatards, Dead Boys and Stooges. The band name is a nod to Arthur "Killer" Kane of the New York Dolls, and their look seems completely out of its time: as if the leather clothes, studded wristbands and chains of a local ’80s hair-metal band had found a new home via a second-hand shop. On stage, singer Mattie Lea is sometimes satisfied with nothing more than a short, tight tiger-print brief, while guitarist and songwriter Chloe Jones looks as if she has stepped out of a Conan comic.
They started out in 2018, and three years later their first single, «Sonic Love», was released on Pig Baby Records. On it, they cross the high-speed punk R'n'R of Columbian Neckties with the overdriven trash attack that Greg Prevost unleashed, among others, with the divine Mean Red Spiders. «Narrow Mind» positively drips with love for flamboyant rock. None of this is post-anything, of course, but simply pro-fun. In 2023, their first LP finally came out on Dead Beat Records, but it had already sold out during their first four-week European tour with The Cavemen (!). They are now conquering Europe for the third time and will be appearing at Sedel for the second time. Their second LP will be released soon, and we can only hope that it will be available at the merch stand by the time of the concert, because nobody wants to go home from this legendary evening at Sedel without that record.
These high-energy rock’n’rollers promise uncontrolled ecstasy. The energy comes from different sources, though, as some band members can actually also perform Meat Loaf songs with great fervour. But live, KILLER KIN show no sign of this softer side, because then everything is as hard as their single and the film of the same name, "Point Blank", starring Lee Marvin.
DJ KING GIN before and after the concert. After a longer absence from Memphisto evenings, King Gin himself will finally be spinning records again. With his former bands King Gin Club and The Gegus, he enjoyed international success before the attention surrounding him became too much and he decided to withdraw from the spotlight. Under his real name, he also played records at Northern Soul nights, but now it is time to swap baby-powdered dance floors for sticky beer floors once again. Garage, shingaling, punk, soul and whatever is currently in demand.
