GOTHENBURG SCHOOL RELOADED

With the albums "Days Of The Lost" (2022) and "March Of The Unheard" (2025), the Swedish melodic death all-stars The Halo Effect have made quite an impact on the scene. Now they are coming to Z7 as the headliners of a first-class package. As special guests, they are bringing Italian heavy-goth-alternative metal outfit Lacuna Coil and Finnish melodeath band Omnium Gatherum to Pratteln.

Started in 2019 as a fun project among friends, The Halo Effect have quickly become one of the most popular bands in the melodic death genre. Before forming the quintet, the musicians had already played in renowned bands such as In Flames and Dark Tranquillity, playing a key role in establishing the legendary "Gothenburg school" in the 1990s. According to vocalist Mikael Stanne, with The Halo Effect the musicians wanted to "invent nothing new. We simply wanted to play to our own strengths and create music that feels good." The result of this endeavour was the 2021 single "Shadowminds". Its streams quickly climbed into the millions. The follow-up debut album "Days Of The Lost" was nominated for a Swedish Grammy in 2022 and promoted on tours with colleagues such as Machine Head, Amon Amarth and Meshuggah. They also won the Metal Hammer Award in the "Rising Stars" category in 2024. The all-star band's rise was meteoric. "What I liked about our first album was that everything felt completely new again," says vocalist Mikael Stanne, who had previously spent many years touring with melodeath pioneers Dark Tranquillity. "We didn't know exactly what we wanted to do. It was simply a lot of fun. But then suddenly you have to produce a follow-up to an album that was voted Album of the Year in Sweden by the country's biggest specialist magazine. You ask yourself: OK, how do we do this now?" The solution was found quickly: stay true to their roots while expanding their own visions. The result, "March Of The Unheard", is a triumphant follow-up containing everything that helped its predecessor achieve a rapid breakthrough. Songs such as "Detonate" and "What We Become" showcase the characteristics of the Gothenburg sound, with sharp guitar riffs, energetic drumming and singalong choruses that have made generations of metalheads addicted. Other highlights build on these rousing foundations and then take things one step further. "Between Directions", for example, adds orchestral strings that fit perfectly into The Halo Effect's high-energy repertoire. Proggy synths wobble at the start of the opener "Conspire To Deceive", "Our Channel To The Darkness" explodes from introspective acoustic guitars into a massive metal storm, and the album reaches a choral and symphonic conclusion with the instrumental "Coda". "March Of The Unheard" is not merely another masterpiece of Gothenburg melodeath; it shows that even 30 years after the genre's breakthrough, these musicians still have a wealth of fresh ideas to keep pushing this kind of music forward.
